Dr. Reid Gómez: Mary Bernard Aguirre Professorship for 2026-2027

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Reid Gómez is the winner of the Mary Bernard Aguirre Professorship in Gender and Women’s Studies for 2026-2027!!

The Mary Bernard Aguirre Professorship is awarded through the generosity of Rowene Aguirre-Medina and Roy Medina and honors the career of Mary (Mamie) Bernard Aguirre, by some accounts the first woman Department Head at the University of Arizona, in the Department of Spanish. Find out more about Mamie in the Plaza of Honor database: https://plaza.sbs.arizona.edu/honoree/2341. 

The Professorship is awarded based on forward-looking ideas that serve the best interests of the Department by promoting outstanding research, teaching, and/or the building of intellectual community. 

Enhancing GWS’s mission of THE FEMINIST STUDY OF EVERYTHING, Dr. Gómez will use the Professorship to further expand her skills as a comic, zine, and hand lettering media creator. While studying letterpress techniques, she will develop a new GWS course in Activist Media; make herself available to work on GWS zines, flyers, and other media; further expand her pedagogical practice of teaching with zines; and work on a set of zines for her MLA panel in January 2027.
